HOLLYWOOD, Fla. — The turnpike might be faster, but sometimes, it isn’t fast enough.
Kathryn Yeater, 21, went into labor Wednesday while watching television at her mother-in-law’s house.
Her mother-in-law, Diane Weatherington, hurried the soon-to-be parents into her car for the 20-minute drive to the hospital.
Weatherington said she drove the turnpike to get to the hospital faster.
But it wasn’t fast enough.
“I’m hopping at 75, 80 and she says, ‘Oh, my water just broke!’ Then, I buried that (speedometer) needle,” Weatherington said.
By the time they reached the Hollywood toll plaza, the baby was well on its way.
Weatherington tossed a quarter at the attendant, yelled for an ambulance and pulled over.
A paramedic arrived, and soon after, so did 7 pound, 13 ounce Brittney.
