HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Griffin Hits, Hurls Simi Valley to Championship

Sara Griffin pitched two complete games to lead Simi Valley High to the championship of its softball tournament Saturday. Griffin threw a four-hitter in an 8-0 victory over San Marcos in the final after allowing three hits in a 2-1 victory over Buena in a semifinal.

Griffin, who went four for seven with a home run, struck out seven against San Marcos and 10 against Buena. Dayna Skinner’s two-run single sparked a four-run third inning for Simi Valley (4-0) against San Marcos.

In other softball games:

Hoover 3, Fresno Bullard 2--Nancy Evans struck out 23 in two games to lead Hoover (4-0-1) to the championship of the Hart tournament. Evans had 10 strikeouts and one walk in an eight-hitter against Bullard (4-1). She pitched a three-hitter, striking out 13 with no walks, in a 5-2 victory over Hart in a semifinal.

La Reina 6, Lompoc 0--Michelle St. Pierre tossed a two-hitter after Jennifer Baltruzak fired a two-hitter in a 6-0 win over Burroughs in the Simi Valley tournament.

Alemany 9, Apple Valley 0--Sophie Contrerras pitched her second shutout of the day and Tammy Alcintara hit a grand slam in a Simi Valley tournament game. Contrerras earlier beat St. Bonaventure, 1-0.

BASEBALL

Crespi 6, La Mirada 5 (9 innings)--Keith Evans drove in Brad Farlow with a sacrifice fly in the ninth to give the Celts (4-1) third place in the El Segundo tournament. Evans (2-0) pitched the final four innings for the win.

Thousand Oaks 22-5, Lompoc 4-6--Clint Harris of Thousand Oaks (3-3) was six for six in the nonleague doubleheader and is 14 for 18 this season.

For Thousand Oaks, Greg Aguilar was three for five with three runs batted in and Jamal Nichols homered, tripled and drove in four runs in the first game. Andy Wilson doubled in each game and Josh Silverstein and Brad Cohn each doubled in the first game.

Royal 7, Arcadia 4--The Highlanders (3-2) scored five runs in the sixth inning in a 13th-place game of the El Segundo tournament. Brian Fernandez went two for four, including a two-run triple. Gene Strojek had two doubles.

Quartz Hill 7-5, Barstow 1-4--William Wallace hit a pair of two-run home runs and pitched two shutout innings in the first game of a nonleague doubleheader. In the second game, Jeff Bowne, Chris Grado and Mike Kenny each hit home runs.

Mira Costa 8, Burroughs 7--Mira Costa scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh in a round-robin game of the El Segundo tournament. Chris Centeno went three for four for Burroughs (2-3).

North Hollywood 16, Gardena 6--The Huskies (3-2) scored 13 runs in the fifth to break open the third-place game of the L.A. Invitational.

Ignacio Olmos (three RBIs) and Robert Talamantes (two RBIs) each had three hits.

Newbury Park 7, Los Amigos 2--Keith Smith went two for five with a three-run home run to lead the Panthers (1-4) to their first victory in a consolation-bracket game of the Loara tournament.

Shortstop David Lamb doubled and singled for Newbury Park.

Cleveland 8, Monroe 4--Scott Foli and Mike Flegenheimer each drove in two runs for Cleveland in the San Fernando tournament. Joel Zamudio had two doubles for Monroe (3-2).

Kennedy 9, Birmingham 3--Jeff Tagliaferri slugged two home runs and drove in five runs as Kennedy (5-0) concluded a 5-0 run through the San Fernando tournament.
