GIRLS’ ROUNDUP : Costa Mesa Defeats Morningside, 49-46
Olivia DiCamilli, a senior forward, led Costa Mesa with a game-high 24 points and also had 11 rebounds as the Mustangs beat Morningside, 49-46, in the Southern California Regional Division III final at the Sports Arena on Saturday.
Jessica Lurmann, also a senior forward, came off the bench and had a team-high 14 rebounds for Costa Mesa (29-4).
Costa Mesa will play Sacramento St. Francis (26-5) next Saturday in the Oakland Coliseum. St. Francis beat Pleasant Valley, 52-47.
Lisa McNamee, Costa Mesa coach, said that she told her players before the game that they had nothing to lose.
“Every single second every kid was on the floor, they were going at them with every ounce they had,†McNamee said.
Costa Mesa held a 47-40 lead with two minutes remaining, but Tina Thompson, a senior center, made three baskets to lead the Lady Monarchs on a 6-2 run.
With two seconds remaining, senior guard Kameisha Prewitt missed a three-point field goal for Morningside (28-3).
Thompson led the Lady Monarchs with 19 points and had a game-high 19 rebounds.
Morningside led, 9-7, after the first quarter, but the Mustangs outscored the Lady Monarchs, 16-11, in the second quarter and never relinquished the lead.
