GOODBY SALUTE? Not everyone’s upset about closing the El Toro Marine base. Newport Beach leaders have long pushed for converting it to a commercial airport--which would reduce noisy John Wayne Airport takeoffs above Newport Beach homes. After this week’s El Toro base closure news out of Washington, Newport Beach Mayor Clarence J. Turner quipped at a luncheon: “I was out there this morning taking airline reservations.â€
