COUNTYWIDE : Man Arrested After 9-Hour Standoff
A Newbury Park man was arrested Saturday after a nine-hour standoff with Ventura County sheriff’s deputies surrounding his home.
Constantinos Kallas, 42, was being held in Ventura County Jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and brandishing a weapon. Bail was set at $5,000.
Sgt. Keith Parks said deputies were summoned to Kallas’ home on Kitty Street about 10 p.m. Friday after receiving a complaint that Kallas had tried to stab a neighbor. When the deputies arrived, Kallas tried to advance on them with a stick and a knife, Parks said.
Deputies sprayed a pepper-based solution onto Kallas and he fled into his house, Parks said. Deputies, including a Special Weapons and Tactics team, surrounded the house but made no further effort to arrest Kallas until morning, when they fired a tear-gas bomb into the house.
Deputies then entered the house and arrested the suspect.
