In a move to lighten his work schedule, Jim Lampley is leaving KMPC radio, program director Len Weiner said Friday.

Lampley, who hosted a morning show on KMPC, said his TV schedule had grown too complicated for him to continue on radio. He works on NFL games, Notre Dame football and golf for NBC and boxing and Wimbledon for HBO.

Lampley is also expected to replace Bob Costas for the 1993 season as host of NBC’s NFL studio show.

To replace Lampley, KMPC is expected to pick up Don Imus’ general talk show from WFAN in New York.

There is precedence for using a New York talk show on morning radio in Los Angeles. KLSX has Howard Stern and KFI has Rush Limbaugh.

Weiner stopped short of confirming that KMPC will carry Imus’ show, but he acknowledged such speculation was on target.

In the meantime, KMPC will use Jack Snow with various hosts such as Chris Roberts in the mornings.

Lampley said he wasn’t physically worn down, but he thought it was unfair to the station to miss as many days as he has to miss. He also said, “Because of the TV obligations, I sometimes wasn’t as prepared as I would like to have been.â€
