Division III Girls’ Final : Costa Mesa vs. Inglewood Morningside, 10 a.m.
SITE--Sports Arena
RECORDS--Costa Mesa (29-4), Morningside (28-2)
COSTA MESA--Olivia DiCamilli, a 5-10 senior headed for San Diego State, has turned up her game to the tune of a 31.7 scoring average in six playoff games, nine more than she averaged during the regular season. Heather Robinson has shown she can be a strong supporting player, and Yool Kim and Neiar Kabua have been effective ballhandlers. April Van Sweden, a 6-2 senior, must play as big as she is.
MORNINGSIDE--The top-seeded Monarchs have a definite advantage in height and depth. Tina Thompson and Cha-Ron Walker present a formidable duo in the middle. Thompson (6-2), who is headed to USC, averages 17 points and nine rebounds; Walker (5-11) averages 10 points and nine rebounds. Playmaker Kameisha Prewitt (11.6 points) has shown a willingness to drive to the basket and get the foul.
KEY TO THE GAME--Costa Mesa isn’t great against the press, but it has maintained its composure throughout the playoffs and must continue to do so against Morningside. DiCamilli will get her points, and Robinson will likely add her 14, but the key player on the court might be Van Sweden, who can’t let Thompson and Walker have their way on the offensive boards. Morningside wins because of its second and third shots, not its first.
CONSENSUS--It’s too easy to pick Morningside, which has reached the State final four of the last five years. Costa Mesa plays a full 32 minutes, which is an advantage against the Monarchs. Thompson is not immune to foul trouble, and DiCamilli’s maneuvers under the basket will guarantee it. And DiCamilli, who made 15 of 18 from the line in the semifinals, refuses to let her team lose. Including this time.
