SWAT Team Storms Hotel Room, Finds Man Dead

A Long Beach police SWAT team stormed a hotel room where a robbery suspect had holed up Friday night and found him dead of wounds suffered in an earlier confrontation with officers.
The confrontation at the Arcade Hotel, in the 1000 block of Long Beach Boulevard, followed a 4:30 p.m. robbery at a Vons store a block away, Long Beach police spokesman Bob Anderson said.
Witnesses followed the man to the hotel and summoned police, Anderson said. When officers opened the door of the suspect’s hotel room, a woman came outside, Anderson said. “They (officers) pushed her out of harm’s way and then fired at the suspect, who yelled he wasn’t coming out,” Anderson said.
The officers backed out of the room when the man refused to come out and said he would kill anyone who tried to enter, Anderson said.
SWAT officers were called and, two hours later, they stormed the room.
