‘Fog’ Jockey Carmouche Denied Reinstatement
NEW ORLEANS — Sylvester Carmouche, ‘the fog jockey†who hid in haze at Delta Downs to win by 24 lengths on a longshot, was denied reinstatement Thursday by the Louisiana State Racing Commission.
Carmouche, who has served almost three years of a 10-year-suspension, for the first time publicly acknowledged that he didn’t ride the entire distance aboard Landing Officer on that foggy night in January 1990.
Carmouche said he pulled his horse up soon after the start of the race, then waited for the field to come to him on the far turn. When he heard the other horses coming, he started riding toward the wire.
“After I broke, then I decided to pull him up,†Carmouche said. “Nobody pushed me to do something like that. I just decided during the race.â€
He said he didn’t bet on Landing Officer.
The vote against Carmouche was 8-1 with one abstention.
