Lion Baseball Team Returns Home
The Loyola Marymount baseball team will open its West Coast Conference home season with a three-game series against St. Mary’s starting today.
The teams will play at 2:30 p.m. today and are scheduled to play a doubleheader at noon Saturday.
Loyola (8-12) is tied with Pepperdine for second place in the WCC at 2-1. St. Mary’s is 6-12 and 1-2.
Loyola has been led by catcher Andy Biaggi and pitchers Shane Bowers and Shawn Hammett.
Biaggi, a senior, is batting .365 with three home runs and 14 runs batted in. Bowers and Hammett are first and second in the conference in strikeouts. Bowers, a junior, is 3-3 with a 4.21 earned-run average and 44 strikeouts. Hammett is 3-3 with a 4.34 ERA and 43 strikeouts.
The Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team will play a three-game California Collegiate Athletic Assn. series against Cal State San Bernardino starting today.
The Toros will play host to the Coyotes at 2:30 p.m. today and will travel to San Bernardino for a doubleheader at noon Saturday. Dominguez Hills is 11-7 and 3-2 in the CCAA, and San Bernardino is 8-8 and 2-5.
Dominguez Hills has been led by designated hitter Ariel Martin, who has a 17-game hitting streak and a .377 batting average. First baseman Greg Bergeron is batting .422. Pitcher Scott Veeder is 2-2 with a 2.08 earned-run average.
Harbor College will have two representatives at the third annual California men’s all-star basketball game at 5 p.m. Saturday at the University of San Francisco’s Memorial Gym.
Forward Jerry Allen, a 6-foot-4 sophomore who averaged 21.2 points, will play for the South squad. The South will be coached by Jim White, who guided the Seahawks to a state title in 1975. White works at the school as an administrator.
Junior forward Zan Mason of the Loyola Marymount men’s basketball team, who led the Lions in scoring and rebounding, has been named to the 1993 All-West Coast Conference team.
Mason, a 6-7 transfer from UCLA, finished fourth in the conference in scoring with a 14.4-point average and third in rebounding with a 6.8 average. Senior forward Brian McCloskey received honorable mention for the Lions (7-20), who finished last in the conference.
The Loyola Marymount men’s volleyball team, which has lost seven of its past eight matches, will play host to UC San Diego at 7:30 p.m. today at Gersten Pavilion.
Loyola is 3-8 and 2-7 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. San Diego, competing in its first season in Division I, is 0-18 and 0-11.
The USC football team will conduct workouts from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and March 22 at El Camino College stadium as part of its spring practice schedule.
The practices will be open to the public.
