PREP ROUNDUP : Nguyen’s Final Set Helps Valencia Defeat Servite

In the final set, Steve Nguyen defeated Dan Lighthipe, 7-6, to help Valencia edge Servite, 10-8, in a nonleague boys’ tennis match at Valencia High School.

Nguyen, who won two of three sets, won the tiebreaker against Lighthipe, 7-4, for Valencia (2-0).

In other nonleague matches:

Costa Mesa 13, Tustin 5--Jason Regala swept at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-2, 6-1 for visiting Costa Mesa in its season opener.

Dana Hills 13, Newport Harbor 5--Eric Lundblad swept at No. 2 singles for host Dana Hills (1-0).

Irvine 14, Huntington Beach 4--Todd Harrington and Erol Yildiz each swept in singles and the team of Frank Kim and Michael Kao swept in doubles for visiting Irvine (1-0).

Ocean View 9, Los Amigos 9 (Ocean View wins on games, 74-71)--Danny Diaz swept at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-2, 6-0 for visiting Ocean View (1-1).

Sunny Hills 18, Los Altos 0--David Robbins and freshman Joseph Gilbert swept their singles sets losing only one game each for Sunny Hills.

Villa Park 10, Saddleback 8--Jason DeVera and Ryan Hollis won all three of their singles matches for Villa Park (2-0). The No. 2 doubles team of An Nguyen and Ky Hoang swept, 6-2, 6-1, 6-2 for Saddleback (0-1).

In nonleague golf:

Capistrano Valley 215, Foothill 224--Alicia Allison shot a one-over-par 37 for Foothill at Tustin Ranch.

Corona del Mar 196, Marina 214--Kevin Walden shot a one-over-par 37 for Corona del Mar (3-0) at Newport Beach Country Club.

Orange 181, La Quinta 198--Brady Richards fired a par 31 to lead Orange (1-0) over La Quinta (1-1).

Los Amigos 228, Western 237--Tiger Woods of Western (0-1) was medalist with a one-under-par 35 at Los Coyotes. Matt Stafford shot a 40 to lead Los Amigos (1-0).

In nonleague boys’ swimming:

Marina 118, Long Beach Wilson 48--Jon Kenyon won the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke for Marina (1-0).

Mater Dei 115, Santa Ana Valley 57--Don Turk captured the 200 individual medley (2 minutes 8 seconds) and 100 breaststroke (1:05.36) for Mater Dei (1-0). Todd Wines qualified for the Southern Section Division I meet in the 100 freestyle (47.37) and 100 backstroke (55.22) for Santa Ana Valley (0-1).

In nonleague girls’ swimming:

Marina 96, Long Beach Wilson 74--Alison Mijares won the 200 freestyle and Kristie Rietzel won the 100 backstroke for Marina (1-0).

Mater Dei 128, Santa Ana Valley 30--Freshman Jackie Charlesworth captured two events (50 butterfly and 500 freestyle) and swam on the winning 400 freestyle relay with teammates Kim Wilson, Leslie Barbazette and Michelle Pereira for Mater Dei (1-0).

In nonleague boys’ track and field:

Irvine 75, Marina 61--Tony Parrish of Marina won three events, including the long jump (20-1) and triple jump (44-0). Irvine’s Sean Coye won the 110 and 300 hurdles and Irvine also finished 1-2 in the high hurdles and the 200 meters to give the Vaqueros (1-0) the victory.

In nonleague girls’ track and field:

Marina 80, Irvine 52--Jennifer Gillis won the 800 meters (2:26.1) and Kelly Roda took two events, the 1,600 (5:32.5) and 3,200 (12:00.0) for Irvine (0-1).

In nonleague boys’ volleyball:

Garden Grove 3, Valencia 0--Seth Hall had 19 kills for Garden Grove (1-0), which won 15-11, 15-6, 15-1. Valencia fell to 1-1.

Esperanza 3, University 0--Paul Nihipalil had 19 kills and Brad Goldston added 16 for Esperanza (1-0).
