STYLE: WOMEN’S SPRING FASHION : FUTURE SHOCK

Ephemeral and capricious, fashion rides on the winds of change. This spring, progressive designers are challenging many of the basic rules of Western dress. Although relying on retro and hippie styles for sales, the most forward-thinking of them are using this time to experiment. Defying traditional proportions, jackets, blouses and vests are elongated. Designed for comfort, styles are sewn without inner construction. And, as in Eastern dress, garments are layered--tunics over skirts over pants. This season, fashions jar the eye and provoke the senses, but they herald how, perhaps soon, we all may dress. Fast-forward to the future.
