TENNIS ROUNDUP : Ondruska Completes a Sweep of U.S. Davis Cup Members
South African Marcos Ondruska, four years ago the No. 1,093-ranked player in the world, upset fifth-seeded Brad Gilbert, 7-5, 6-2, Friday in the quarterfinals of the Purex Championships at Scottsdale, Ariz.
Ondruska, who got into the event after three players withdrew, completed a four-set sweep of America’s current Davis Cup singles duo after eliminating David Wheaton on Thursday.
Ondruska, 21, meets No. 8 Andrei Chesnokov in today’s semifinals. Chesnokov broke Derrick Rostagno’s serve six times for a 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) victory in the first quarterfinal.
In the other semifinal, second-seeded Andre Agassi will face Australian Mark Woodforde. Woodforde upset third-seeded MaliVai Washington, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3, then Agassi needed only 54 minutes to defeat Emilio Sanchez of Spain, 6-1, 6-1.
Anders Jarryd upset second-seeded Goran Ivanisevic, 6-3, 6-4, in the quarterfinals of the World Tennis Tournament at Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
Ivanisevic complained of pain in his serving arm, but doctors were unable to determine the cause of the problem.
Jarryd, ranked 156th in the world, will play fifth-seeded Alexander Volkov, who advanced with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Goran Prpic.
Top-seeded Conchita Martinez of Spain defeated No. 6 Wiltrud Probst of Germany, 6-3, 6-4, to reach the semifinals of a women’s indoor tournament at Linz, Austria.
Martinez will play fourth-seeded Leila Meskhi of Georgia, who defeated Natalia Baudone of Italy, 6-3, 7-5.
