COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Karliner Paces OCC’s Big Comeback

Randy Karliner drove in five runs and Orange Coast rallied from a seven-run deficit to beat Hancock, 12-11, Thursday in a nonconference baseball game at OCC.

Karliner had a single, double and triple for the Pirates, who trailed, 10-3, in the fifth inning. Karliner’s two-run single in the seventh, the game’s final two runs, completed the comeback.

In other nonconference baseball:

Rancho Santiago 11, East Los Angeles 0--Jason Wakefield had three hits and Chris Lugo had two, including a triple, for host Rancho Santiago (9-1).

Saddleback 6, San Diego City 2--Bo Haley had two hits, including a triple, and drove in two runs for Saddleback (8-1). Mitchell Pang added two hits and two runs batted in for Saddleback.

Fullerton 5, Long Beach 4--Mickey Fortie tripled home a run in the seventh inning to tie the score, then came home with the winning run on Jeff Kafoury’s double for visiting Fullerton (7-4). Long Beach is 4-5.

Golden West 7, L.A. Harbor 1--Joe Fraser had two hits, scored three runs and drove in two more and Jim Slagle had two hits and two RBIs to help the host Rustlers (4-5) beat Harbor, the third-ranked team in the state.

David Vergara (1-0) pitched a four-hitter, striking out nine and allowing no earned runs. Harbor (6-4) scored an unearned run in the seventh.

In the Riverside baseball tournament:

Cypress 10, Mt. San Jacinto 5--Keith McDonald went two for three with a home run and a double to lead Cypress (10-3) in a winner’s bracket game at Cypress. Pat Simec pitched six innings to earn the victory, striking out five.

In nonconference softball:

Southwestern 2, Saddleback 1--Saddleback suffered its first loss of the season despite nine strikeouts by Laura Kesterson (8-1). Shelley Byrd and Felicia Benavides both went two for three for the Gauchos (9-1).

Fullerton 4, Mt. San Antonio 1--Alicia Robles pitched a complete game, scattering six hits for Fullerton (5-1-1).

In Orange Empire Conference men’s tennis:

Golden West 8, Orange Coast 1--Joe Spano, Mike Moenter and James Cahil swept their sets for Golden West (1-0, 3-2). Orange Coast is 0-2, 2-2.
