GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Caudillo Paces Roosevelt to Victory Over Huntington Park

It was business as usual for Denise Caudillo.

The 5-foot-7 junior guard scored a game-high 26 points to pace Roosevelt to a 64-47 victory over Huntington Park in a Southeastern Conference game Friday.

Caudillo has scored 20 or more points in her last eight games in a row and in 11 of the Roughriders’ 16 games. She also had 22 and 20 points against South Gate and Fremont earlier in the week.

Liz Guevara had 10 points and Lisa and Leona Jacobs added eight points for the Roosevelt, which won its second game in a row after two consecutive losses.

Records: Roosevelt 12-4; Huntington Park 1-10.

Dorsey 59, Washington 55--The Dons prevailed after Sharmanee Bundy missed a three-point shot in the closing seconds of a Southern Pacific Conference game.

Tamu Agiza, who had a game-high 33 points, had given Dorsey a 58-55 lead with a little more than a minute left.

Records: Dorsey 13-6, Washington 8-11.

Eagle Rock 54, Lincoln 39--Yammir Carbonell had 18 points and nine steals and Marianna Martinez added 14 points and 13 rebounds for the host Eagles in a Northern Conference victory.

Martha Reyes and Inocencia Ibarra scored 13 and 10 points, respectively, for Lincoln.

Record: Eagle Rock 14-6.

Manual Arts 56, University 32--Ronneka Taylor had 13 points and 15 rebounds for the visiting Toilers, who recorded their sixth consecutive victory in the Coastal Conference game.

Records: Manual Arts 7-2.

Wilson 55, Hollywood 30--Brenda Argumaniz had 17 points and 10 rebounds and Adriana Castellanos scored 12 points for the visiting Mules in a Northern Conference game.

Record: Wilson 10-6.

San Gabriel 44, Bell Gardens 36--Iris Ortega scored 12 points to help the Lancers cut an 11-point second-half deficit to 38-34 midway through the fourth quarter.

But Pat Sencion made four consecutive free throws in the last two minutes to secure the Almont League victory for visiting San Gabriel.

Records: San Gabriel 19-3; Bell Gardens 12-9.

WEDNESDAY

South Gate 73, Bell 29--The Rams won their 15th game in a row in the Southeastern Conference at Bell. Letty Madrigal and Michelle Gonzalez scored 16 and 15 points, respectively, and Nancy Maciel added 13 points and four blocks for South Gate.

Records: South Gate 15-1; Bell 6-10.

Roosevelt 69, Fremont 58--Denise Caudillo scored 22 points and Leona Jacobs had 16 points and 20 rebounds for the Roughriders in a Southeastern Conference game at home.

Records: Roosevelt 11-4; Fremont 12-4.

Carson 57, Dorsey 38--Tamu Agiza had 16 points and Alicia Williams had 10 for Dorsey, which was missing four players because of injuries, in a Southern Pacific Conference game.

Record: Dorsey 12-6.

Wilson 59, Lincoln 51--Donna Gordon scored 12 of her 25 points in the fourth quarter to lift the Mules to a Northern Conference victory.

Gordon also had 13 rebounds and Virginia Mar had five steals for Wilson, which trailed by as many as 12 in the second half.

Records: Wilson 9-6.

TUESDAY

Bell Gardens 62, Montebello 53--Iris Ortega had 17 points and five assists and Maria Landeros had 12 points and nine rebounds for the visiting Lancers in an Almont League game.

Record: Bell Gardens 12-8.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 85, Cal State Los Angeles 68--The Golden Eagles squandered an 11-point first-half lead in a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. loss at San Luis Obispo Thursday night.

After trailing, 54-42, midway through the second half, Cal State L.A. closed it to 64-61 on a free throw by Ugochi Nwamuo with 4:54 left. However, San Luis Obispo scored nine consecutive points over the next 1:18 to open a 73-61 lead.

Pamm Ross had 24 points and 12 rebounds and Maritza Cruz, a freshman from Huntington Park High, had 16 points, nine rebounds and six assists for Cal State L.A.

Ross and Nwamuo combined for 14 of Cal State L.A.’s first 18 points to help the Golden Eagles open an 18-7 lead in the first five minutes.
