The Santa Ana and Fullerton National Guard armories, which have been available as emergency shelters for the homeless this winter, will be closed Friday through Sunday.

Shelter for the Homeless spokesperson Abba Anderson said the armories will be used on those days for regular training, but two area churches will offer shelter over the weekend to make up for the lost beds.

Community United Methodist Church, 6662 Heil Ave., Huntington Beach, will be open all three days. The Orangethorpe United Methodist Church, 2359 W. Orangethorpe Ave., Fullerton, will be open Saturday and Sunday. Shelter check-in begins at 5 p.m. at both locations.

Anderson said that each church can shelter up to 100 people a night and that breakfast and dinner will be served.

Donations of food and blankets may be sent to Shelter for the Homeless, 8291 Westminster Blvd., Suite 170, Westminster.

The organization is also seeking people aged 16 or older to help serve food and clean up. Volunteers will be needed from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Anderson said.
