Compton : Scholarship Fund Honors McCarther Siamese Twins
Compton Community College has created a scholarship fund in memory of former students Yvonne and Yvette McCarther, the Siamese twins joined at the head who died last month at 43.
The fund is to help disabled students pay for books and tuition. It will be administered through the Disabled Student Services office on campus, school officials said.
“It’s appropriate that they should have a scholarship fund established in their name to continue the legacy they have left us,†college President Warren A. Washington said. “They were marvelous human beings.â€
The sisters, who had been attending the community college since 1987, had met all requirements for graduation and were preparing to go through commencement this June. Their degrees were granted posthumously and presented to family members at the twins’ funeral.
The college has launched a drive throughout the community to raise funds for the scholarship. Donations may be sent in care of Antoinette Wheeler, Compton Community College Disabled Student Services, 1111 E. Artesia Blvd., Compton, 90221.
