EL SERENO : Dinner Raises Funds for Youth Center
A recent dinner to mark Councilman Richard Alatorre’s 20 years in public office raised $700,000 for the construction of the El Sereno Youth Center.
The El Sereno Youth Development Corp. was formed in 1992 as a nonprofit organization to raise money and build the center. Few recreational opportunities for youths exist in the area, said Alatorre press deputy Luisa Campano.
Organizers are searching for a site for a two-story center that would include a swimming pool, a gym and several classrooms. The center would offer recreation, training and counseling for the community, said Marina Martinez, corporation president.
Organizers hope to have the center completed by 1996, Martinez said.
