100,000 Oil and Coal Workers Could Walk Next Week: Up to 100,000 workers in the oil and coal industries may strike next week if negotiations fail to produce new contracts. Walkouts by the 60,000 members of the United Mine Workers Union and 40,000 members of the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers International Union would confront President Clinton with his first large-scale labor problem. More than 300 of the oil workers’ union contracts expire at midnight Sunday. A UMW contract with the nation’s largest coal operators expires at midnight Monday.
