Oregon State is learning just how valuable point guard Brent Barry is.
Barry, who has a bruised calf, missed his second consecutive game and Arizona State surprised the Beavers, 82-73, Thursday night at Corvallis, Ore.
“Our offense is very definitely sputtering,” said Jim Anderson, Oregon State coach. “We were very hesitant attacking the basket after breaking the full-court pressure, but part of that is caused by the opponents’ defense.”
Oregon State (9-7, 5-2) trailed by 13 points in the second half but cut the lead to 70-65 with 4:53 remaining on Kareem Anderson’s three-pointer.
However, the Beavers missed the next three shots and Arizona State (9-5, 3-3) made its final three and sank four of five free throws down the stretch.
Stevin Smith had 21 points for the Sun Devils, including five of nine three-pointers by Arizona State, which is second in the nation in three-pointers.
Oregon State, which lost its second game in a row after starting the Pac-10 season 5-0, had a 21-12 lead, but the Sun Devils went on a 12-0 run to take a 24-21 lead with 6:02 left in the half.
No. 8 Arizona 92, Oregon 60--Damon Stoudamire scored 17 points and the Wildcats won their 10th consecutive game by routing the Ducks at Eugene, Ore.
Arizona (12-2, 6-0) made only 43% of its shots in the first half but still held a 40-25 lead because Oregon (7-12, 0-7) shot 30%, committed nine turnovers and was outrebounded, 27-17.
Washington State 64, Stanford 59--Eddie Hill scored 20 points and the Cougars rallied in the final five minutes to defeat the Cardinal at Stanford.
Stanford (6-12, 1-5) led, 53-51, with 6:52 remaining after a free throw by Dion Cross, but the Cougars’ Fred Ferguson scored a layup to tie the score and Washington State (9-6, 3-3) took the lead with four free throws.
Marcus Lollie had 18 points for Stanford.
California 79, Washington 65--Jason Kidd scored 14 points and set a school record with eight steals as the Golden Bears defeated the Huskies at Berkeley.
Kidd, who had a record-tying six steals in Cal’s upset of UCLA Sunday, broke the mark he shared with Kevin Johnson.
Lamond Murray scored 15 points for Cal (10-4, 2-2), which equaled last season’s total of 10 victories.
