The Koreatown Assn. of Los Angeles, celebrating its 20th anniversary, has launched a campaign to raise $5 million to build a Koreatown community center.

Gene Kim, founder and chairman of the group that sponsors the annual Korean Festival, said the proposed center would be a place for cultural exchange, education and social activities.

“The Korean community wants to show our culture to the American mainstream and we want to help our community learn about other ethnic groups,†Kim said. The center would be called the Koreatown Multicultural Center, he said.

Nearly $1 million has already been pledged by groups in South Korea and Los Angeles, he said.
