HONEST OPINIONS

My reading of David Lohrey’s review of Richard Rodriguez’s “Days of Obligation” (Nov. 15) leads me to conclude that Mr. Lohrey has hatched a new media designation: that of critic/spin doctor.
Rodriguez’s honest perusal of his self-awareness enabled him to find “refreshing truths in historical events,” tub-thumps Lohrey. Obscured thus is the possibility that Rodriguez is honestly expressing merely his opinions. . . . Revealed truths are rare, especially those holding that the Evangelicals were angels in their treatment of Native Americans.
I’m not here denouncing Rodriguez, as Lohrey fears, nor questioning his honesty; I, in my imperfect wisdom, feel compelled to implore that he and Lohrey examine the precision of their thinking.
