Give the folks who put on the Five Counties wrestling tournament at Fountain Valley credit for bringing in a stellar field.
The tournament, which begins at 3 p.m. Friday and continues at 10 a.m. Saturday, is by invitation-only and includes the top three teams from last season’s State meet.
Clovis, three-time defending State champion, travels south from the Central Section. State runner-up Poway, from the San Diego Section, and third-place finisher Shingle Springs Ponderosa, from the Sac-Joaquin Section, also will compete.
El Modena, top-ranked in Orange County, and Calvary Chapel and Savanna, tied for second in the county, lead the list of Southern Section teams that will compete.
“You better bring the ice bags and bandages because you’re going to need them--probably on the first day,” El Modena Coach Alan Clinton said. “I’m looking for a bad team and I can’t find one. It’s probably going to be us.”
He’s just kidding.
El Modena is coming off a second-place finish at last week’s Estancia tournament. The Vanguards finished some 25 points behind Moreno Valley Canyon Springs. Irvine, which trailed El Modena by a mere half-point Saturday, also will compete Friday.
The other county entrants are fifth-ranked San Clemente, No. 7 El Dorado, and unranked teams from Fountain Valley and Santa Margarita.
