Planned Parenthood’s Proposed Clinic

The Beach Cities League of Women Voters strongly supports Planned Parenthood Los Angeles’ proposed plan to open a clinic in the South Bay.

The league believes that the services which will be offered by Planned Parenthood’s proposed clinic will provide a very wide range of reproductive choices to the local community. The most important of these services is family planning, which accounts for more than two-thirds of Planned Parenthood’s proposed client contacts. Planned Parenthood’s proposed clinic also will offer outreach and education programs which stress the advantages of premarital abstinence to young adults as well as gynecological services and prenatal care to pregnant women.

In addition, Planned Parenthood provides counseling to couples who have problems conceiving. Abortion services, which account for approximately 5% of Planned Parenthood’s client contacts, ensure that women will have a full range of legal reproductive choices.

But we believe that Planned Parenthood’s most important activity, assisting clients with family planning, is one of the most effective ways to reduce the abortion rate.

The Beach Cities League of Women Voters’ decision to support the Planned Parenthood clinic is consistent with our organization’s state and national position, which is based on study, discussion and consensus of our members. We believe that in a pluralistic society an individual must have the constitutional right to privacy and the freedom of reproductive choice.

The proposed Planned Parenthood clinic will give a full range of reproductive choices to women in the South Bay. We therefore urge the local community to assist and support Planned Parenthood Los Angeles in its efforts to provide both information and services in our community.
