Two championship-winning football coaches are among the applicants for the vacant coaching position at St. Francis High.

Former Crespi Coach Bill Redell, who led the Celts to the Big Five Conference title in 1986, and Poly Coach Fred Cuccia, who coached the Parrots to the City Section 3-A Division championship in 1991, said they have sent resumes to St. Francis.

Former St. Francis Coach Andy Boynton was fired last month after the Golden Knights completed a 3-6 season. Father Lawrence Caruso, St. Francis principal, confirmed that Redell and Cuccia have applied.

He said the school will accept applications through Feb. 15.

Redell, 50, coached Crespi in 1982, then took a job as an assistant for the USFL’s Boston Breakers for two years before returning to Crespi for the 1985 season.

He left Crespi after the 1988 season to follow the career of his son, Ron, who played at Stanford.

Redell, who works for an insurance company and would be a walk-on coach if hired at St. Francis, said he is interested in returning to coaching now that Ron has completed his final year of football at Stanford.

“I know (St. Francis has) a fine tradition, but they have been down the past few years,†Redell said. “I know it’s a fine school and I would be interested in discussing (the position) with them.â€

Cuccia, 47, said he is interested in the job because he lives near the La Canada school and would like to coach his son, Rocco, a seventh-grader who would like to attend St. Francis.

Cuccia also said problems between the Los Angeles Unified School District and the Los Angeles teachers’ union, which has scheduled a strike for next month, factored into his decision.

Cuccia, whose Parrots finished 6-4 and missed the playoffs last season, said he is happy at Poly and the St. Francis job is “probably the only job that I would leave Poly for.â€
