BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Humphreys’ 24 Help Master’s Post Rare Win Over Westmont
The Master’s College defeated host Westmont, 80-77, Tuesday in an NAIA District 3 game, the Mustangs’ first victory over the Warriors in more than 30 years, according to Master’s Coach Mel Hankinson.
“That’s one of the biggest wins in the history of the school,†Hankinson said. “It’s a super win for us.â€
Dave Humphreys made 10 of 14 field-goal attempts and scored a game-high 24 points for Master’s (8-8, 2-2 in district play).
WOMEN
Northeastern Illinois 55, Cal State Northridge 51--Visiting Northridge (4-7) blew an eight-point halftime lead in a nonconference game. The Golden Eagles (1-9) outscored Northridge, 9-3, in the final five minutes. Michelle Esparza scored 24 points for Northridge.
Ventura 72, Glendale 54--Nicole Ellis scored 15 points and had nine rebounds, and Cori Herman had 10 points and eight assists to lead host Ventura (10-4, 2-0 in conference play) in a Western State Conference game. Glendale is 7-7, 1-1.
Pierce 95, Compton 41--Yolanda Davidian scored a season-high 38 points and freshman Shani Samuel had a season-high 29 for Pierce (5-9, 1-1) in the WSC game at Compton. Davidian had 17 rebounds.
Valley 90, Moorpark 56--Amy Horst missed only one shot while scoring a personal-high 25 points to lead visiting Valley (15-4, 1-1) to a WSC win.
BOYS
Crescenta Valley 71, Murphy 34--Adam Jacobsen had five three-point baskets and 22 points to lead the host Falcons (12-1).
Cleveland 74, Jordan 43--Shawn Bankhead scored 40 points and had 17 rebounds for the Cavaliers (5-5) in a first-round game of the Bell tournament.
Santa Clara 55, Carpinteria 38--The Saints (11-5) put the game away by outscoring Carpinteria, 17-6, in the fourth quarter. Brian Clark scored 24 points.
Saugus 46, Hoover 44--Mike Thompson’s layup with one second to play lifted the Centurions (3-8) to a nonleague victory over visiting Hoover (7-5). Chad Reese of Hoover had 21 points.
GIRLS
St. Bernard 67, Alemany 46--Playing without two starters in a Mission League opener, Alemany (12-3) committed 21 turnovers and gave up a season high in points. Samantha Rigley scored 25 points.
Buena 77, San Marcos 33--Mikko Giordano scored 27 points as the Bulldogs (5-2) coasted in a Channel League opener. Julie Hardy added 15 points and April Buck had eight rebounds.
Thousand Oaks 62, Simi Valley 41--Marion Jones scored 18 points for host Thousand Oaks (13-0) in a Marmonte League opener.
