WEST HOLLYWOOD : Gambling Measure to Be Tested at Polls Again

The West Hollywood City Council has agreed to place a new legalized gambling measure on the ballot this year.
The initiative’s sponsors, who run a private bridge and rummy club on Sunset Boulevard, want to set up a new club where players could bet legally against each other.
City voters roundly rejected a similar measure in 1990. But supporters hope that the new measure, which sets aside 10% of club earnings for city coffers, will find new support amid the current recession and budget cuts.
Backers had submitted enough signatures to force a vote, but City Atty. Michael Jenkins said the petition was flawed. The council voted 4 to 0 on Monday to put the issue to a vote anyway, but will require the sponsors to pay the costs of a special election.
