LANCASTER : 3 Hurt When Truck Rams Fire Engine
A Lancaster man was seriously injured Tuesday when his pickup truck slammed into the back of a county fire engine, authorities reported.
The firetruck, which was not responding to an alarm, was westbound on Avenue M about 9:40 a.m.
After stopping for a traffic signal at Sierra Highway, it was rear-ended by a pickup driven by Kenneth Skirvin, 31, said Deputy Michael Rice of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
“The engine was rear-ended by a pickup truck that apparently didn’t even hit its brakes,†County Fire Inspector Devin Trone said.
Skirvin suffered a broken nose and facial cuts and bruises, Rice said.
He was listed in serious condition at Lancaster Community Hospital, a nursing supervisor said.
County Fire Engineer John Hoffman, 53, of Lancaster and firefighter John Sandoval, 47, were treated for back pain from a nearby hospital and released, Rice said.
Capt. James Nelson escaped injury.
Skirvin’s truck was destroyed and the fire engine sustained moderate damage, Rice said.
