COMPUTER DOG: You get a bonus if you are among the first 5,000 to adopt a dog or cat from the Orange County Animal Shelter this year: a free microchip implant. . . . The chip, about the size of a grain of rice, is injected into the animal, like a vaccination. If the animal is ever lost or stolen, a scanner will pick up the presence of the chip and the special unique identification number on it. . . . “This is a permanent form ID that can never ever be taken away from the pet,” said Marie Hulett-Curtner, a shelter spokeswoman.
