Computer systems analyst Doug Kurtis of the United States beat a field of 150 runners to win Hanoi’s first international marathon in 2 hours 39 minutes 14 seconds. Tim Soutar, a British lawyer living in Hong Kong, was second in 2:50:04.
The race marks another step in Vietnam’s attempt to break the international isolation that followed its invasion of Cambodia in 1978.
