Roth in the Dark
The Times quotes Orange County Supervisor Don R. Roth as saying, “I believe citizens want to reduce the size of government†(“O.C. to Close Doors 1 Day Per 2 Weeks,†Dec. 2).
It seems apparent that Supervisor Roth fails to grasp the true meaning of the significance of the concept of the size of government.
That was the message that citizens clearly sent to government in the recent elections. Additionally, we are no longer willing to put up with the attendant waste, fraud and abuse.
The hidden costs of such closures will never be known, but surely they are there. It is difficult to believe that only Supervisor (Roger) R. Stanton would challenge this practice.
Changing a work schedule does not reduce the size of government. It merely moves the numbers around in such a manner that is not readily, if ever, calculable.
This is yet another indication that Supervisor Roth might well assess his personal situation and take the recently published advice of Shirley Grindle and others--depart now.
