Sunny Hills 14, Rancho Alamitos 13--Jacob Cuccia scored on a four-yard run with 38 seconds remaining to give Sunny Hills the Division VII title in the game at Santa Ana Stadium.
Cuccia, who finished with 46 yards in 13 carries, helped set up the winning touchdown with a 38-yard halfback option pass to wide receiver Richard Sanchez on third and eight play with 1:04 left. The completion gave the Lancers (12-1-1) a first down at the Rancho Alamitos eight. Cuccia scored two plays later.
The winning score came 2:03 after the Vaqueros (11-3) had taken a 13-7 lead. Tailback Jeff Byrd, who rushed for a game-high 190 yards in 45 carries, ran it in from the two, but the snap on the extra-point attempt sailed over the holder’s head.
