Baldwin Park : Railway Station Decor
Indian footprints dancing across the floor and an archway replica of one wall of the San Gabriel Mission will decorate the Baldwin Park Commuter Rail Station, now under construction.
Artist Judy Baca, hired by the City Council last June to create public artwork in the station, presented her drawings to the council Wednesday and got approval for her concept.
“I wanted to depict the confrontation of the indigenous people and the Spaniards, which created the mixture that is Southern California today,†Baca told the council.
The Gabrielino Indian dance steps will be replicated in bright colors on the 400-foot black concrete rail platform amid facts about the California missions, Indian words and depictions of the floor plans of the four missions closest to Baldwin Park.
The station is expected to be completed in February, 1993.
