Hooray for Houston: Boosted by the success of Whitney Houston’s screen debut in “The Bodyguard,†the film’s Houston-dominated soundtrack album sold more than 292,000 copies last week. That doubles the sales punch of rival releases and moves it into the No. 1 spot on the nation’s pop album chart in the Billboard magazine that hits the newsstands Saturday. The collection, released on Arista Records, sold about 160,000 more than Eric Clapton’s “Unplugged†and 161,000 more than Ice Cube’s “Predator,†which will rank No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. Christmas albums by Amy Grant and Garth Brooks were also Top 10 sellers last week, contributing to the more than 12 million albums sold during the first seven days of the holiday shopping season.
