Crappie Go on Feed at Casitas
The crappie bite turned on at Ventura County’s Lake Casitas, which produced the lake’s largest of the year, a 3.4-pounder, for Jim Clow of Ojai, and a batch of 20 for Marvin Werber, also of Ojai.
Although the fish normally run pan-size--the world record is only 5 pounds 3 ounces--crappies have an enthusiastic following of devotees. There is no bag limit and, since crappie bites tend to come and go unpredictably, conservationists are concerned that their devotees will fish them out during one of the sprees.
“We’ve been trying to get the state to put a limit on them,†said Randy King of the Casitas marina.
