Moorpark Sweeps WSC Football Honors
Moorpark College made it a clean sweep of the major Western State Conference awards in football for Northern Division teams.
Gil Carrillo was named offensive player of the year, Kenyon Lewis defensive player of the year and Jim Bittner coach of the year.
Joe Mauldin of Valley was offensive player of the year in the Southern Division.
Carrillo, a freshman fullback, finished second among conference rushers with 1,103 yards in 135 carries. Lewis, a sophomore safety, anchored a Moorpark defense that is top-rated among junior college units in the state. Bittner guided the Raiders to a 9-0-1 record, the Northern Division championship and a berth in the Potato Bowl.
Mauldin, a sophomore quarterback, broke the conference’s single-season total offense record. Mauldin passed for 1,905 yards and rushed for 796 yards for a total of 2,701.
Hart High tailback Deriek Charles and Saugus center Shawn Stuart have been selected the Foothill League’s co-players of the year.
Charles, a versatile 5-foot-7, 155-pound senior, helped lead the Indians to an 11-1 record. Charles had 104 carries for 1,133 yards, caught 44 passes for 757 yards and scored 24 touchdowns.
The 6-4, 280-pound Stuart was the anchor of Saugus’ offensive line. Stuart, a senior, is regarded as one of the Southland’s top recruits.
Kristen Wegner of Cal Lutheran was named to the Academic All-District VII volleyball team. Wegner is an accounting major with a 3.86 grade-point average.
Cal State Northridge linebacker Bryon Ward and volleyball player Dawn Krenik were named CSUN athletes of the month for November.
Ward, 6-foot-3, 225 pounds, was selected first-team All-Western Football Conference. He had eight tackles and an interception to help CSUN upset 11th-ranked Sacramento State on Nov. 14.
Krenik, a 5-7 senior outside hitter, is the Matadors’ all-time leader in service aces (128) and digs (1,102).
