BUENOS AIRES : A Democratic Agenda

The ups and downs of democracy in Latin America, including last week’s bloody coup attempt in Venezuela, will be the hot topic at a regional summit meeting today and Wednesday in the Argentine capital.
Besides Venezuela’s troubles, presidents of the so-called Rio Group of nations are expected to discuss whether to admit Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori back into their fold--he was excluded from the group after he suspended democratic government last April, but he held elections for a new congress Nov. 22.
The Rio Group evolved from the Contadora Group, which supported Central American peace talks in the 1980s. Current members are Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Paraguay, Uruguay and Venezuela, plus Honduras as the representative for Central America and Jamaica for English-speaking Caribbean countries.
