Post-Riot Series: ‘Separate Lives’

Your special reports were most interesting. Unfortunately, as per your usual liberal bent, the prevailing train of thought leans toward removing any blame from the individual criminal element and placing it on “society”--whatever that means.
Carlos Vaquerano, in his Q & A, continues to blame governmental neglect of the Pico-Union area as the reason for rioting there (Nov. 16). Has it crossed his mind that possibly there were just maybe one or two lawless thugs who decided to take advantage of the situation in South Los Angeles to practice their trade?
Donald Bakeer follows in this vein by continuing to blame “white government” for the riots. And, not necessarily in the healing tradition, he has the audacity to state, “Koreans need to get out of the liquor store business to create good faith in the black community.”
Why is it always the other guy’s fault? What has happened to personal responsibility and personal accountability?
