Gunda Niemann of Germany capped a dominating performance on the opening weekend of the World Cup long-track speedskating season with a victory at 5,000 meters at Berlin. She won in 7 minutes 22.83 seconds, nearly 10 seconds ahead of the field. The victory gave Niemann a sweep of the 1,500-, 3,000- and 5,000-meter races.
Bart Veldkamp of the Netherlands won the men’s 5,000 in 6:50.00.
