OUTLOOK
The Vanguards were co-champions with Santa Ana Valley last season and should be at the top again. They have four starters and a top reserve back, making them the league’s most experienced team. Tivenan is optimistic but wary. “I believe we could be as good or better then we were last year,†Tivenan said, “but so will the rest of the league.†Yes, but none of them have a big man to compare with Aquilera, who averaged 15 points and 11 rebounds and was named the league’s co-MVP. Shine, a tight end on the football team, complements Aquilera up front, giving the Vanguards two guys who can bang. With Krupka and Williams, the Vanguards have better size then anyone in the league. “We should be pretty good inside,†Tivenan said. Perez will play at point guard; he averaged nine points and four assists last year. Aquilera and Perez were first-team all-league picks. Wilson and Wood will have to be consistent from the perimeter to keep teams from packing it in. “We have five guys who started at one time or another,†Tivenan said. “Hopefully, that experience will benefit us.†It should be good enough for at least a second-place finish.
