OUTLOOK
The Comanches are an unknown. They have people back, but just how good they will be is a mystery even to their coach. “We have some gaps to fill, and we’re starting a sophomore at point guard,†Sabins said. “It’s a rebuilding year, but I think we’ll be all right.†They will be if they stay healthy, something they didn’t achieve a year ago; Judy and Pappas both suffered broken ankles. Judy missed the entire league season, and Pappas played in only six league games. Jalowiec was also slowed by a separated shoulder he suffered during football. All three are now healthy--so far. Kilbarger is a talented point guard but lacks experience. Pappas, Whelan and Cesa will have to improve inside. One or all of them must develop a more fierce style. “We lost our two centers from last season, and we don’t have any one who plays physical right now,†Sabins said. “We need muscle.†The front line was further weakened when junior center Jeff Learing moved to Texas. “We lack size and speed,†Sabins said. “We do have intelligent players, and they shoot the ball fairly well.†But it’s hard to tell whether that’s enough.
