‘Where Are All the Fathers?’
The message that our children provide an incredible motivation for us to do our best is extremely important.
This motivation only occurs when a natural bond develops between a father and child, and as a society we have placed many obstacles along this path. We expect fathers to fail, which turns into a self-fulfilling prophecy for many. Programs for young unwed mothers consider fathers to be a hindrance and seek to separate them from the situation all together. This approach is also inherent in our welfare policy.
The four generations of fathers in Marco William’s family likely never experienced any sort of bond with their children, and therefore, never really had a chance to be a dad. This is not to excuse their paternal responsibilities, but to point out that focusing fault solely on them is not the answer. You cannot expect men to go from sex partners to paychecks without the joy and love of being a dad.
