More than half a million people will need the Salvation Army’s help this holiday season as Southern California suffers through one of its worst recessions in history, officials said Monday.
“It’s going to be an especially tough Christmas for a lot of people,” said Lt. Col. David Riley of the charitable organization. “The recession is affecting a lot of people. . . . 400% more people are asking for our help this Christmas (compared to last year).”
Riley’s remarks came as the Salvation Army marked the 101st anniversary of its Christmas kettle campaign. A handful of celebrities were present at Mann’s Chinese Theatre to focus attention on the drive.
