EAST ROUNDUP : Rutgers Ends Its Losing Streak Against West Virginia

Ray Lucas made a surprise start and helped Rutgers end a seven-game losing streak against West Virginia with a 13-9 victory Saturday at Piscataway, N.J.

Lucas, starting in place of Bryan Fortay, hit Jim Guarantano on a 32-yard scoring pass in the second quarter and John Benestad kicked field goals of 26 and 24 yards for the Scarlet Knights (6-4).

Mike Vanderjagt had field goals of 34, 22 and 24 yards for West Virginia (4-4-2).

Louisville 31, Pittsburgh 16--The Cardinals (5-6) turned three interceptions thrown by Alex Van Pelt into touchdowns, including Anthony Bridges’ 77-yard touchdown return, to beat the Panthers (3-7) at Pittsburgh.

Army 21, Northern Illinois 14--Rick Roper had 109 of the Cadets’ 350 yards rushing in a victory over the Huskies at West Point, N.Y.

Army (4-5) held LeShon Johnson of Northern Illinois (5-5), the No. 3 rusher in the nation at 132.7 yards per game, to 68 yards. Johnson had a 79-yard touchdown run nullified by a holding penalty.

Princeton 36, Yale 7--Joel Foote passed for 233 yards and the Tigers clinched a share of the Ivy League title by routing the Elis at New Haven, Conn.

Princeton (8-1, 6-0) held Yale (4-5, 2-4) to 125 yards of offense, 48 yards on the ground, and won the Big Three title after beating Harvard, 21-6, three weeks ago.

Dartmouth 51, Brown 28--Jay Fiedler passed for 234 yards and two touchdowns and 234 yards as the Big Green routed the winless Bears in an Ivy League game at Providence, R.I.

The victory kept the Big Green (7-2, 5-1), which plays Princeton next week, in the hunt for a share of its third consecutive Ivy title.

Columbia 35, Cornell 30--Chad Andrzejewski threw 33 completions and 294 yards as the Lions (2-7, 1-5) ended the Big Red’s chances of an Ivy League co-championship at New York.

Cornell (7-2, 4-2) had a seven-game winning streak snapped.

Penn 21, Harvard 19--Sundiata Rush ran for 164 yards and a 71-yard touchdown before breaking his left ankle, and the Quakers (6-3, 4-2) held on for an Ivy League victory at Philadelphia.
