Republicans Claim 2 Close Elections
STOCKTON — Two Republicans are the apparent winners in close congressional and Assembly races after San Joaquin County election officials counted more than 15,000 absentee ballots.
Richard Pombo, a Tracy rancher, defeated Democrat Patti Garamendi in the 11th Congressional District in the unofficial count announced late Monday. Assemblyman Dean Andal of Stockton prevailed over Linden rancher Michael Machado in the 17th Assembly District.
Early returns last week had given Pombo and Machado narrow leads.
Andal, elected to the Assembly in a 1991 special election, had 57,851 votes or 50.3%, to 56,793, or 49.4%, for Machado.
