PREP ROUNDUP : Los Alamitos Sweeps, Shares Empire Title
Los Alamitos swept past Cypress in an Empire League girls’ volleyball match Thursday to gain a share of the league title.
Luann Petix had 35 assists to help Los Alamitos to the 15-13, 15-8, 15-13 victory. The teams each finished 9-1 in league, but Los Alamitos will enter the Southern Section playoffs as the league’s No. 1 team because it won head-to-head games, 5-3. Los Alamitos is 12-2 overall.
Heather Lowe had 17 kills for Cypress, ranked No. 9 in Orange County.
In the Century League:
Orange 3, Villa Park 0--Mary Pezzetti had 13 kills for the Panthers, who won, 15-9, 15-13, 15-10. Orange (13-5, 6-4) finished third, making the playoffs.
In the Garden Grove League:
Santiago 3, Kennedy 1--Host Santiago upset league-leading Kennedy, 3-15, 15-7, 15-12, 15-10, to finish third, making the playoffs. Michelle Cornette led the Cavaliers with 16 kills, followed by Jennifer Morris with 11 kills. America Robledo had 12 assists for Santiago (14-4, 10-4). Kennedy is 12-2 in league.
La Quinta 3, Bolsa Grande 0--Jennifer Holcomb had seven kills and Tam Pham had seven aces in La Quinta’s 15-8, 15-5, 15-13 victory. La Quinta is 11-5, 11-3.
In the Freeway League:
Sunny Hills 3, Fullerton 0--The Lancers finished their league season undefeated by beating Fullerton, 15-4, 15-4, 15-3. Rachel Hochgesang led Sunny Hills (15-1, 10-0) with 10 kills and Jennifer Coopman had eight. Sunny Hills had clinched the league championship last week.
In the Orange League:
Brea-Olinda 3, Savanna 0--Marsha Conrad had eight kills for visiting Brea-Olinda, which won, 15-3, 15-12, 15-11. Brea-Olinda finishes 11-5, 8-2, and advances to the playoffs as the second-place team.
Valencia 3, Western 0--Brandy Smerko had 17 kills and five blocks in Valencia’s 15-2, 15-9, 15-13, victory over third-place Western (9-7, 6-4). Valencia, the league champion, is 13-3, 10-0.
In the Pacific Coast League:
Laguna Beach 3, Laguna Hills 0--Rachel Wacholder had 12 kills to lead the county’s second-ranked team Laguna Beach (17-1, 9-1) to a 15-9, 15-3, 15-3 sweep. With the victory, Laguna Beach clinched the league title.
Estancia 3, Costa Mesa 0--Christine Heims had nine kills to lead Estancia (9-6, 8-2) to a 15-4, 15-1, 15-2 sweep.
In the Sea View League:
Newport Harbor 3, Saddleback 0--Dani Foley had eight kills to lead second-place Newport Harbor (12-4, 11-3).
Irvine 3, Tustin 0--Kristi McNitt had 16 kills and Meghan Biesty had 37 assists as Irvine swept, 15-3, 15-10, 15-5.
Santa Margarita 3, University 1--Meghan Neihaus had 10 kills to lead Santa Margarita (8-8, 8-6) to a 12-15, 15-8, 15-13, 16-14 victory.
In the South Coast League:
El Toro 3, Mission Viejo 0--Tishara Jespersen had 16 kills and Analisa Saylor had 33 assists for the Chargers (11-3, 8-2) in a 15-6, 15-5, 15-13 victory.
Capistrano Valley 3, Dana Hills 0--Outside hitter Shelly Smith had 10 kills, helping fifth-ranked Capistrano Valley (14-2, 9-1) clinch its fourth consecutive league championship with a 15-5, 15-12, 15-0 victory over Dana Hills (3-7 in league).
Mater Dei 3, San Clemente 2--Roberta Gehlke had 19 kills and Heather Daze had 10 blocks for host Mater Dei (8-5, 6-4), which won, 15-10, 15-10, 8-15, 12-15, 15-7. Setter Allison Stricklin had a season-high 56 assists for the Monarchs.
In the Sunset League:
Fountain Valley 3, Westminster 0--Lisa Brown had eight kills and Jessica Salmans had 23 assists for Fountain Valley (10-6, 10-4) in a 15-2, 15-0, 15-8 victory over Westminster (7-9, 5-9).
In South Coast League water polo:
Capistrano Valley 12, Mission Viejo 4--Jake Yokota scored five goals to lead Capistrano Valley (23-2, 4-1), the No. 2-ranked team in Orange County.
In the Sunset League girls’ tennis finals:
Cruz wins singles title--Joyce Cruz of Rosary won, 6-3, 6-7, 6-2, in the singles final and Fountain Valley’s Nora Kapche and Nina Basica won, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, in doubles. With the victories, Cruz and Kapche-Basica qualified for the Southern Section tournament Nov. 21.
