‘92 SAN GABRIEL VALLEY ELECTIONS : The Results Didn’t Count, but the Experience Did for These Young Voters
Noontime brought a crush of boys and girls into the auditorium at Clifton Intermediate School in Monrovia to participate in a mock election.
Don Dagne, the school’s activity director who organized the event, said students have spent the past month learning about the electoral process, building voting booths in woodworking classes and drawing up posters and ballots. Bumper stickers and buttons for Perot, Clinton and Bush adorned the auditorium walls.
“It’s been quite exciting,†Dagne said, “We’ve probably got three-quarters of the students wearing red, white and blue today.â€
“It’s our own small nation here,†added Kimberly Biggle, 12, who cast her ballot for Bush. “We learned how it feels to vote and how important it is.â€
“It was a hard choice,†added Clinton voter Lua Yuille, 11. “I learned how adults feel when they have to decide who they want to lead the country.â€
Student body President Nora Graham, 13, agreed, saying she didn’t know enough about taxes to discern which of the candidates had the best economic position.
“I think that’s why the voting age is 18,†she confided.â€
Clinton won, with 308 votes to 159 for Perot and 105 for Bush.
