ANTELOPE VALLEY : Pledge Will Help Hospital Expand

The Antelope Valley Hospital Medical Center has received a pledge of $440,000 to help expand its Neonatal Intensive Care Nursery.

The pledge came from the hospital’s fund-raising group, The Auxiliary, which is made up of 500 volunteers who have raised $1 million for hospital projects over the past 35 years. They plan to raise the money over five years through their thrift shop, baby photo sales and Christmas bake sales.

Last year the nursery, the Antelope Valley’s only facility for high-risk babies, cared for 423 infants. Between 1984 and 1991 it treated 3,018.

“On a regular basis we’ve exceeded our capacity,†said Sherry Colombero, director of the nursery. “Sometimes we’ve had to transfer babies as far as San Diego.â€

The expansion will add a private breast-feeding room and 17 beds to the nursery’s existing 10 beds. Construction is expected to begin in February or March, 1993, and be completed in three or four months.
