VOLLEYBALL : Roosevelt Girls Stay No. 1 With 4-Set Win Over Bell
The Roosevelt girls’ volleyball team maintained its No. 1 ranking in the Southeastern Conference with a victory in four sets over Bell on Tuesday.
The Roughriders disposed of the Eagles, 15-8, 10-15, 15-13, 15-4, to move to 12-1 overall and 7-1 in conference play. Bell fell to 8-4 and 4-4.
In the first set, the Roughriders ran off 10 consecutive points behind four kills by senior Lisa Jacobs and three by senior Gabby Gallegos.
Jacobs finished the four-set contest with 13 kills, one block and one ace, and Gallegos ended up with five kills and four aces.
Bell senior Tina Cabral had three kills and teammates Ingrid Flores, Adrina Gonzalez and Carol Molina each served an ace to help the Eagles win the second set.
The lead changed hands three times in the third set. Seniors Leona Jacobs (six kills) and Jackie Villegas (seven kills) sparkled for the Roughriders, while juniors Rubi Percell (five kills) and Teresa Nunez (seven kills, two blocks, two aces) were impressive for Bell.
Roosevelt scored nine consecutive points en route to a 15-4 fourth-set victory. Junior Liz Ballesteros had four aces for the Roughriders, and Gallegos had the winning kill.
