Senior tailback Scott Mitchell rushed for 267 yards in 38 carries and scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns as Agoura High upset host Newbury Park, 24-20, Friday night to hand the Panthers their first Marmonte League loss.
Trailing, 20-18, with 10 minutes to play, Agoura mounted its comeback when defensive back Evan Sanchez caused Panther receiver Leodes Van Buren to fumble after a 16-yard pass reception. Agoura’s Billy Heywood recovered at the Charger 40.
Mitchell then got the call on 12 consecutive plays, rushing for all 60 yards, and scored the go-ahead touchdown. Behind left tackle Brian Burris’ block, he scored on a one-yard run with 3 minutes 48 seconds remaining.
“Each play came in and (it was), ‘Here we go again,’ ” Mitchell said. “It was the best win of my career.”
The Panthers (6-2, 4-1 in league play) then drove 64 yards in 15 plays to the Charger one-yard line. But Keith Smith’s pass was broken up by Sanchez in the end zone as time expired.
Charger linebacker Kevin Sass stopped Smith on a scramble on the preceding play to prevent a touchdown.
Smith connected on 21 of 40 passes for 265 yards and two touchdowns. Panther receiver Jason Toohey finished with six receptions for 87 yards and a touchdown and Van Buren caught five passes for 82 yards.
